A novel elevated-temperature Kelvin probe device dedicated to gas analysis hasbeen designed, built, and tested to establish the feasibility of the approach for detecting hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas. The results indicate that the device has a response time of less than a few seconds, is stable, has excellent reproducibility, and has the potential for analysis of a broad dynamic range of concentrations. There are no observed interference signals from common atmospheric gases, such as water vapor, and operation at elevated temperature offers additional means of speciation for potentially interfering chemicals through both desorption process and surface reactions unique to H2S. The application for the research is a low-level, fixed-point H2S monitor for monitoring air quality at waste water treatment plants, oil refineries, power plants, and petrochemical operations. The general sensing concepts developed in the project should be applicable to a wide variety of chemical compounds.
