To evaluate the feasibility of a prototype real-time display capable ofprojecting a 3-dimensional image holographically, researchers modified the design of a previously developed system to holographically project computer-generated or optically recorded views of a 3-D scene. These views are modulated with high-frequency diffraction components to image them in an appropriate manner, creating a stereoscopic image with horizontal motion parallax. No glasses or other viewing aids are necessary to obtain the three-dimensional effect. Many recent high-quality holograms seen by the general public are actually holographically recorded stereograms generated by an optical printer which is a film-based analogue to this system. As the need for comprehending more complex data intuitively at ever faster rates continues to grow, the need for true 3-dimensional displays is expected to increase as well. Present and future markets for 3-D displays are air-traffic control, computer-aided design, scientific instrumentation, cockpit and crew station display, weather pattern analysis, medical imaging, molecular modeling, remote manipulation/teleoperation, and possibly the consumer entertainment industry (3-D television and video games).
