Weather Forecasting Strategies for City and County Road Maintenance Operations

The report describes the impacts of weather on roadway maintenance activities, with a focus on cities and counties, as obtained from interviews with road maintenance supervisors. The report further describes weather information technologies currently being used or investigated for use to reduce the impact of weather on maintenance activities and to reduce the costs of those activities. Recommendations presented include: implementing road weather information systems through interjurisdictional and interagency cooperation through the development of a regional staff weather advisory function; instituting a multi-agency weather 'interest group'; documenting the societal benefits and costs of snow and ice control maintenance.
