At the University of California at Berkeley, early research in rationalseismically resistant design focused on the development of DELIGHT.STRUCT and a design methodology that includes linear and nonlinear time history analyses and reliability-based ideas within the design process itself. The reliability of such a design methodology depends on both the validity of modeling of design earthquakes and the ability of analytical models to describe nonlinear response. The objective of the present research work is to develop a unified earthquake-resistant design method for MDOF moment-resisting steel frames, including the design earthquake via a time varying linear stochastic process (ARMA) model. The features of the method are as follows: (1) it incorporates inherently uncertain features of the design earthquakes into the design process itself through the dynamic ARMA model; (2) it provides a simplified design formula for a preliminary design of moment-resisting steel frames using a stiffness-oriented design and (3) it facilitates the formulation of a new probabilistic multi-objective optimal design problem aimed at finding the design with the minimum level of designer's dissatisfaction.
