The objective of the study described was (1) identify innovative methods to repair leak sites in black steel pipe installations in-situ to avoid the inconvenience of restoring residential and commercial property; (2) analyze existing methods and technology to remove impurities from pipeline gases; (3) assess the various inspection and maintenance programs of domestic and foreign gas utilities for interior gas piping systems and evaluate their adequacy for broad residential and commercial applications. The study was conducted on the basis of available literature, correspondence with and visits to a number of gas distribution companies. Based on a review of available literature the study identified a number of innovative conceptual methods for repairing gas leak sites in black steel pipe installations in-situ. Recommended repair methods are described in detail. The existing methods and technology for removing impurities from pipeline gases was reviewed. On the basis of the review, two research studies capable of brining a better understanding to the area were recommended. A study dealing with inspection and maintenance needs of interior piping systems was conducted. Part of this involved a complete review of gas detection methodology and the use of vertical risers (vertical subdivisions) in high-rise buildings for gas service. Gas detection methods are described and rated as to their potential use in high-rise building gas service installations.
