Researchers have developed a nuclear detector system for capillaryelectrophoresis (CE). The prototype detector, built in Phase I, was constructed from a small, solid-state cadmium telluride (CdTe) nuclear radiation sensor and was made to encircle the capillary tube. The miniature detector was shown to have about 83% detection efficiency and a spatial resolution of about 1.25 mm. This level of performance matched that of a standard photomultiplier tube, coupled to a thin plastic scintillator, which is typically assumed to be the most sensitive nuclear detection system available. With this new detector, rapid, high resolution separations of DNA sequences can be analyzed.
