National Archives Preservation Research Priorities: Past and Present

The paper describes preservation research conducted and funded by the National Archives from its creation in 1934 until the present. Previous research has concentrated on the stability of record materials, environmental conditions, and the development of standards. The current program incorporates the same components but places greater emphasis on quality control and on systems for the handling of preservation problems. Current research priorities discussed in the paper include shrink wrapping, image analysis, film and tape stability, photographic activity testing, and stability of optical media.
