The report deals with the implementation of numerical algorithms for the solutionof partial differential equations on simple, rectangular grids, for massively parallel systems such as the INTEL iPSC/2 hypercube. With the aid of two examples, the numerical solution of Poisson's equation and a plasma physics kernel, it demonstrates the implementation and discusses several problems including granularity, synchronization, communication and scalability. The parallelization strategy is based on domain decomposition techniques. Many timing and efficiency results for different problem sizes and numbers of processors are given in the appendix. Finally a sample source listing of a test problem is included which represents a first insight in a typical parallel program. (Copyright (c) GMD 1990.)
