Post-Construction Analysis of Environmental Impacts: Calamus Dam and Reservoir.

This study assesses the effectiveness of environmental impact analyses done for the North Loup Project, Calamus Dam and Reservoir, Nebraska, by conducting post-construction evaluations of vegetation and wildlife in the area. The first studies of the Calamus site were conducted in 1977 as part of the process of predicting impacts associated with construction of a dam and reservoir. Baseline data were gathered to: describe the major vegetative types, estimate abundance of large and small mammals, and define bird populations inhabiting the area. The information was used to prepare an EIS (Environmental impact Statement) and subsequently a mitigation plan for the project. This study, conducted in 1986 and 1987, uses the 1977 baseline information and compares the pre- construction predictions of impact to those which actually occurred. This permitted an evaluation of the accuracy of the impact study as well as testing some of the basic assumptions of the study team.
