Investigation of Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage in Radical Cations. Final Report, June 1988-September 1990

The report describes an investigation of radical cations of coal-related aryl-alkyl compounds in which reaction mechanisms and kinetics have been elucidated and related to fundamental and quantifiable properties of molecules. These findings support the development of quantitative models for predicting radical cation reactivities based on the molecular structure of neutral precursors, as well as provide understanding of how radical cation reaction pathways, such as side chain fragmentation, deprotonation, and nucleophilic addition, may be controlled.
