Effect of Alternative and Reclaimed Areas on the Value of Wetlands

The report develops the economics of decisions about the best use of wetlandsacross the nation based on a generalization of research conducted in Kentucky. The authors develop a theoretical framework which relates types of wetlands and relates wetlands to other valuable economic goods. They allow for consumptive wetland uses such as hunting and nonconsumptive wetland uses such as nature observation as well as off-site uses such as magazine reading. Nonwetland-related activities include all other pursuits such as housing or clothing the household. The authors allow for uncertainty on the demand side, say about future recreation activity, and on the supply side, say about the length of time which a restored wetland will function.
