National High Blood Pressure Education Program (NHBPEP). Working Group Report on Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

Many reports have addressed the use of ambulatory devices in evaluating blood pressure changes with different antihypertensive drugs; correlating target organ damage and hypertension; and assisting with diagnostic problems such as 'office' ('white-coat') hypertension, borderline hypertension, resistant hypertension, and special clinical situations such as orthostatic hypotension and pheochromocytoma. Researchers also have used ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) coupled with electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring to study such problems as syncope and 'spells.' The report addresses the current state of ABPM methodology, normal blood pressure profiles, the clinical and research uses of ABPM, cost considerations, and recommendations for use of the technique in selected circumstances.
