Advanced Intelligent Flexible Assembly Systems, Workshop/Research Study. Held on May 8-10, 1989

Flexible Assembly Systems are part of Flexible Manufacturing Processes. Emphasis is placed on the design and control of the system that assembles the parts through a system that is flexible to take on a variety of assembly tasks. The task of assembly of parts to make a product may be achieved through hard automation or through flexible automation. A three-day study was planned to examine the flexible assembly process and systems and to arrive at a set of recommendations which induce the prioritized research issues, opportunities, and means of advancing the technology. Twelve areas of research opportunities are identified: technoeconomic analysis, system configurations, sensing, maintenance, end-effectors, part presentation, part mating, in-process inspection, modeling and representation, product design, assembly programming, and assembly planning. Details of these opportunities grouped into six categories are presented in the report.
