Analysis of Medicare Customary Charge Distributions

The goals of the project were to test the feasibility of effectively andefficiently acquiring physician pricing data on customary charges. In the initial phase, data files containing customary, prevailing and reasonable charge (CPR) pricing and provider identification information were obtained directly from Part B carriers. The second phase entailed acquiring additional data files on Part B claims experience for the original study States. The third phase expanded the study to include pricing and claims data from additional States. The final phase involved simulations of the aggregate and redistributive effects of implementing the Medicare Fee Schedule in 1992 and acquiring and validating updated carrier CPR pricing files.
