A new scheme for the analysis of the origin and propogation of errors in length-based dimensions is presented, one which is applicable to the characterization of measuring machines, machine tools, and the dimensioned parts which they characterize or form. The scheme involves a matrix of four dimensional-type-specific errors (associated with the length-based quantities of displacement, position, distance and extension) and three measurement-axiom-specific errors (associated with rules governing the zero, the unit and the scale of measurement). Application of the scheme is illustrated by a propogation of error analysis of the use of a laser-interferometer-based coordinate measuring machine for the determination of the length of a simple part. Also indicated is how an identical analysis applies to the characterization of the performance of machine tools which shape such parts.
