摘要

In the mid-70s, one of the main concerns was to find a way to nationally decrease the amount of energy consumed by buildings. solutions were sought to improve the efficiency of energy use for existing and new heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Early developed and implemented desiccant cooling systems in building comfort applications required larger spaces, needed primary energy sources for regeneration, and were costly. The use of stored, concentrated liquid desiccant, continuously regenerated from dedicated waste heat (cogeneration) allows cost-effective decoupling of sensible and latent loads at cooling coils. This allows higher chilled-water temperatures to be used for comfort control and also results in lower energy use when combined with air-preconditioning and evaporative chilling. The project evaluates a low-cost, off-peak desiccant storage system by: (1) identifying the application requirements and related synergistic benefits for new and remodeled buildings generally requiring higher ventilation rates, (2) determining integrated systems (involving cogeneration, desiccant dehumidification and evaporative chilling) consisting of components that are commercially available, and (3) confining to a payback period of three years or less.
