Emerging Hypermedia Standards: Hypermedia Marketplace Prepares for HyTime and MHEG

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) are currently sponsoring two major projects relating to hypermedia. The Multimedia and Hypermedia Information Coding Experts Group (MHEG) is developing a standard titled Coded Representation of Multimedia and Hypermedia Information. The Music Information Processing Standards (MIPS) committee is developing a hypermedia document interchange standard titled HyTime/SMDL. HyTime has been officially accepted as an ISO project as well. The paper describes the history, technical orientation and status of the MHEG and HyTime projects, as well as their relationship to multimedia and document interchange standards. The relationship between the standards is also explored, with emphasis on appropriate applications and situations where they can be used together in a complementary fashion.
