Assessment of Current Material Test Standards for Masonry Limit States Design Methods

Current masonry structural design codes in the United States are based on a working stress approach. Because of its more rational approach and potential for a better definition of safety and economic benefits the adoption of a limit states design approach is being proposed. The objectives of the report are to: (1) define the material characterization needs of the limit states design method for masonry, (2) critically survey existing test standards and specifications for masonry materials, and (3) identify deficiencies and recommend improvements to existing standards or to recommend drafting of new standards when necessary.
