These post hearing comments summarized the viewpoint of NIOSH concerning exposureto 1,3-butadiene (106990) at the workplace. Issues discussed included: repair of leaks to reduce exposures; remote sensing devices to alert workers of leakage; sampling of process streams; engineering controls, the proportion of equipment that would have to be retrofitted to meet airborne concentrations less than 2 parts per million; closed loop sampling in polymer facilities; the feasibility of reducing 1,3-butadiene exposures to the 1 part per million level; pharmacokinetic risk assessment; organic vapor cartridge breakthrough times and service life; fit testing; engineering feasibility assessments to determine whether engineering controls are feasible; epidemiological studies of lymphatic and hematopoietic neoplasms in 1,3-butadiene exposed workers; field studies; medical surveillance; and the frequency of exposure monitoring.
