Historic Structure Report: Blockhouse (HS-10). Fort Larned National HistoricSite, Pawnee County, Kansas

Fort Larned, located on the plains of south-central Kansas, is a frontier fortthat survived with the major stone buildings of its quadrangle largely intact. The stone Blockhouse, the subject of this report, did not survive. It was torn down around 1900. The Blockhouse was the military center of the fort and all planning documents for the fort anticipated the reconstruction of this building. However, the documentation for the Blockhouse was not nearly as good as for the structures surrounding the quadrangle, and the only physical remains were archeological. To this end, the multidisciplinary research team engaged in archival research, research on similar buildings to develop comparative data, and archeological research of the Blockhouse site. The results of that research and analysis effort is contained in this report.
