Long-Term Earnings Effects of the National Supported Work Experiment: Evidencefor the Youth and AFDC Target Groups

The research utilizes new data to track the earnings effect of the NationalSupported Work experiment (NSW) on the youth and AFDC target groups for eight years following training. Estimates of the post-training earnings effect of the NSW on each target group are presented from 1979 through 1986. The research indicates that the NSW's effect on the AFDC recipients ranged from $375 to $655 in 1978 dollars during the years 1982 through 1986. The sum of the estimated earnings effects for the AFDC treatments over the observed post-training period more than offset the cost of the training program. The NSW was found to have no discernible effect on the earnings of the youth target group.
