Cultural Resource Survey for Proposed Construction Activities at Lake WapelloState Park, Davis County, Iowa. Phase 1

The report details the findings of a Phase I cultural resource survey at LakeWapello State Park, Davis County, Iowa. A pedestrian survey of 22 proposed impact areas was conducted within the parameters of the project area. In addition, the entire lake basin was subjected to an extensive pedestrian survey to investigate for archeological materials. Shovel tests and soil probe excavations were also implemented to investigate for cultural deposits. The cultural resource survey revealed the presence of four previously unrecorded prehistoric sites: 13DV51, 13DV52, 13DV53 and 13DV54. Site 13DV51 may be impacted by the construction of proposed impact No. 8 and shoreline erosion. Site 13DV52 and Site 13DV53 will not be impacted by construction activities at Lake Wapello, but may be impacted by shoreline erosion. Site 13DV54 may be impacted by the construction of proposed impact No. 20 and shoreline erosion. Because of the ephemeral nature of the sites, their low artifact density, and their low potential for research value, the four sites found during the cultural resource survey are not considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
