The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the Office for SubstanceAbuse Prevention, and the National Cancer Institute, along with a group of other interested organizations and agencies, have completed an exploration of the complexities and challenges affecting the communication of health information through the mass media. The report summarizes the issues explored and presents a series of strategies for increasing the cooperation between mass media and the public health community. Recommendations are presented in chapters on marketing, news, entertainment, overcoming barriers to public health cooperation with the media, and overcoming barriers to mass media cooperation with the public health community. The goal of the effort was to create a shared agenda for increasing cooperation between mass media and public health professionals in addressing the issues, problems, and challenges of communicating health information to the public.
