Development of a Pulse Combustion Industrial Dryer. Phase 1: Final Report, August1987-December 1989

The report describes the work undertaken in the Phase II pulse combustionindustrial drying program. A high mean-operating-pressure (nominal 5 PSIG) pulse combustor was designed and installed in a Bepex Corporation, Minneapolis, pilot plant experimental dryer. Concurrent feedstock atomization and drying, the major goal of the Phase II program, have been successfully demonstrated using a wide variety of materials. Calculated drying efficiencies are reported in excess of 90%. For high mean pressure operation (greater than 5 PSIG), the flapper-valved pulse combustor durability needs improvement. The oxides of nitrogen emission levels, typically 90 ppmv (corrected to 3% O2) will probably require significant reduction in the near future.
