Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) concern production technologies andtechnology transfer on an international level between production generations. This report by the International Cooperative Research Program, concentrates upon the development of intelligent machinery for next-generation technologies. In this feasibility study, Japan, Europe, and the U.S. investigated intelligent machines as they are related to manufacturing systems. Each of the following areas were examined for hardware component capabilities, intelligent machine systems, and intelligent technologies: processing machines and processing technology, robot technology, inspection, measurement systems, and high-level control systems.
