Automated systems have found their way into more and more working environments astools for information processing. More and more people are confronted with systems which have not been primarily designed for their individual needs or preferences. Automated systems are infrequently designed to adapt to such users' requirements: users are most frequently forced to adapt to system requirements. In this research a methodology is proposed for the design of user interfaces in which issues related to user preferences and task demands are addressed. This design methodology has been employed in the design and implementation of an experimental information retrieval system, and in the empirical evaluation of the system in field studies. Topics discussed include the following: User interface design--theoretical issues; Field experiment--Comparison of Grass and Quest; Design of an experimental information retrieval system; System architecture; Field study 1--Evaluation of interaction with an experimental information retrieval system; Field study 2--A more complex task.
