摘要

The main objective of this program is to develop an all-inorganic electrolyte primary 'D'cell which is storable and operable in the temperature range of -40to 160F and is capable of delivering in excess of 150 WHrs/lb at thirty hours rate and peak power density of 50watts/lb. The authors showed earlier that the hermetic Li/SOCl2 D cell developed by them met all the above objectives. However,the cells suffered from two deficiencies: (a) explosion hazards and (b) voltage-delay problem. The authors investigated the explosion hazard problem in some detail earlier. At present they are concentrating on the voltage-delay problem. It was demonstrated that the voltage-delay problem was due to a Li anode film formed when Li comes in contact with the LiAlCl4-SOCl2electrolyte. The Li film growth was studied in the above inorganic electrolyte having various salt concentrations and other additives using Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) Technique. It was found that the Li anode film grows in thickness with an increasing storage temperature and an increasing storage duration.
