Slurry Preparation and Characteristics of Samples Consolidated in the Slurry Consolidometer.

This report is concerned with the laboratory techniques and procedures which may be employed in conjunction with a slurry consolidometer apparatus to produce high quality soil samples which possess a known stress history and which are relatively homogeneous in their physical and chemical properties. Specimens trimmed from such samples can then be used with confidence in a test program which is designed to investigate various engineering properties of cohesive soils. After a brief discussion of the general philosophy of slurry preparation,the detailed procedures used to produce slurries at Northwestern University are explained,and the characteristics of a large series of consolidated blocks are described. In addition,certain procedures which may be taken to avoid or eliminate undesirable effects are outlined. (Author)
