Barrel with fine spaced at 0.090 inches was tested to determine quality of thermal bonds between aluminum fins-aluminum base and aluminum base-steel and to compare its heat transfer coefficient with that of barrel with fin spacing of 0.052 inches Fin spacing of 0.090 inches provides 26% greater heat transfer coefficient. Thermal bonds of aluminum fins-aluminum base and aluminum-base-steel o are good; however, mechanical bonds are poor. A 1/6 in. addition in fin width to 0.090 inches spaced fins would increase coefficient an additional 35%.
