Saleh Diffusion Process as Applied to Light Armor Plate

Metallurgical examination of the samples treated at this arsenal under the supervision of Mr. Saleh indicated that the process has no merit as applied to the surface hardening of light armor plate either homogeneous or carburized for the following reasons: (1) The effective surface hardness of specimens treated by the Saleh diffusion method are no greater than those found on the surfaces of properly carburized armor plates after an ordinary quench and draw. (2) The resultant depth of the Saleh case varies considerably but generally is extremely shallow, averaging about .0008-in. in depth. (3) The general characteristics of the Saleh case are not satisfactory, for several reasons.
