Evaluation of Shock Properties of Welded Armor Joints. Examination of Samples from 33 Commercially Welded, Ballistically Shock Tested 'H' Plates

Present methods of evaluating ballistic properties of armor weldments are not entirely satisfactory. Firing tests are subject to apparently insurmountable inconsistencies of testing interpretation, and a great amount of labor and time involved in ballistic firing tests lead to few useful developments. In general, adequate correlations have not been established between ballistics properties and the usual laboratory tests. The purpose of this report is to consider applications and limitations of available laboratory testing methods for welded armor joints, and to compare results of several of these tests with ballistic shock performance.
