The theoretical aspects of a roll stabilization system employing only a free gyro to actuate the flippers are studied. The flippers are either at maximum deflection or in motion. The drive is a servo motor (an electrical motor or solenoid) which can drive the fins through maximum displacement as a linear function of time. General formulas were derived which give the (A) transient and (B) steady state responses. The particular solutions displayed in graphs refer to the 6-inch supersonic coaster model, and were obtained from the general formulas. For this missile, coefficients of lift were obtained from the theoretical values corrected for AR rather arbitrarily. The correction factor used was 0.5 for the fins (AR = 0.5) and 0.7 for the flippers (AR = 0.7). Misalignments in fins were assumed to be nil. (Author)
