Effect of Engine-Operating Variables and Internal Coolants on Spark- Advance Requirements of a Liquid-Cooled Cylinder

Effects are discussed of fuel-air ratio, engine speed, air flow, mixture, temperature, and internal coolants on peak-power spark advance. Relation of spark advance to knock-limited engine performance is determined at different mixture temperatures. Fuel-air and internal cool-fuel ratio affects peak-power spark timing greatly. Knock-limited indicated mean effective pressure at take-off increased 6% when spark timing was retarded from normal value to point where rough operation was reached.
