Overseas Arrival Condition of Glued Unit Loads of Multi-Wall Sacks

An experimental rail and overseas shipment was conducted of glued unit loads of 50 lb. multi-wall paper sacks of sugar. Fifty pound multi-wall paper sacks of sugar were formed into glued unit loads at Yonkers, N. Y., mechanically loaded into a boxcar and shipped by rail to the Naval Supply Depot, Bayonne, N. J. Found to be in excellent condition when unloaded from the freight car at Bayonne, these glued unit loads were placed in storage for a few weeks prior to being placed on shipboard. The glued unit loads arrived overseas in a highly satisfactory condition; made possible a considerable reduction in the manhours formerly required to palletize the sugar at destination; and prevented the loss in transit from ship to warehouse because of rough roads and the slippy nature of the nonglued bag.
