Two-Step Rectification of High Oblique Aerial Photographs

This report covers an investigation of the rectification of high oblique aerial photographs in two steps for the purpose of making an evaluation of this method of rectification in comparison with the one-step method. The rectifying projection camera being developed under MP 488 for the rectification of high-oblique aerial photographs is a single-step instrument which will rectify six-inch focal length aerial photographs with tilts up to 70 degrees from the vertical. That is, the rectification will be accomplished in a single projection. The present investigation was made to determine 1) whether the magnification range and the angular coverage of the instrument under development might be effectively increased by making the rectifications in two steps rather than in one, 2) the relative quality of the two-step and one-step rectifications, 3) the practicability of the two-step method of rectification, and 4) whether an automatic focus instrument of low tilt range, such as the Zeiss SEG I, might be used satisfactorily for high-tilt rectification by this method.
