Cases of increased activity by microorganisms grown in the presence of sub-toxic concentrations of poisonous compounds are familiar to those who assay materials for fungistatic and bacteriostatic properties. Typical recent accounts illustrating this phenomenon are those of Robbins and McVeigh (1946) for hydroxyproline with Trichophyton purpureum, and Hoffmann and Garauly-Janke (1948) for uranium nitrate with a yeast. Pratt and Dufrenoy (1947) state that minute quantities of chromium compounds augment the production of penicillin by Penicillium chrysogenum.
