Calculations of burning velocities of hydrogen-bromine flames indicate that effects of hydrogen atom diffusion are of more importance than those of diffusion of bromine atoms on the basis of our present knowledge of the kinetics of the system. In general, burning velocities calculated for the former are higher than experimental values and for the latter are lower. These may be influenced, of course, by uncertainties in the rate constants ,and temperatures used and the assumption of steady state conditions. However, predictions arising from the calculations of relative reaction rates caused by diffusion of hydrogen and bromine atoms, the effects of pressure, and the 1 effects of diluents - as well as effects of variations in composition offer possibilities for planning experiments to compare the two possible mechanisms of flame propagation.
