The high energy prices and the increased concern about environmental protection have complicated the task of designers of energy intensive systems. This final report summarizes the three approaches developed during the last three years, aimed at helping designers deal with this increased complexity. The three approaches are part of the methods of Thermoeconomics and may be described as: accounting, exploring, and decomposing. The approaches are usually applied in the order given, as the design evolves towards an acceptable alternative. The common purpose of these approaches is to provide insight into the thermodynamics and economics of the design process, with emphasis on the energy use and capital cost associated with choices of equipment.
