The document presents the evaluation of an application by Alabama Power Company and National Nuclear Corporation for a Non-Invasive Coolant Level Monitor for the Farley Power Station, Units 1 and 2. The principle of the non-invasive coolant level monitoring system is based on the detection of 2.2 MeV photoneutrons produced by the interaction of high energy gamma-rays emitted by fission products in the core, in particular, (140)La, with deuterium in the coolant water inside the vessel. The system uses neutron detectors located at the top and at the bottom of the reactor vessel.
