A SURVEY OF FATIGUE LIFE VARIABILITY IN ALUMINIUM ALLOY AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES

A survey has been made of the variability, or scatter, in the fatigue lives of aluminium alloy aircraft structures tested under both symmetric and asymmetric variable amplitude loading spectra and programmed and random loading sequences. Physically and statistically compatible data hae been pooled to increase the precision of scatter estimates and this has clarified the influence of loading conditions on scatter.nIt has been found that, although loading sequence is of little importance, the symmetry or otherwise of the loading spectrum has a major influence on scatter.
