Products of ion-molecule scattering reactions were studied for their energy and scattering angle distributions in atomic transfer reactions between O2(+) and D2, respectively HD, as well as between Kr(+) and D2 respectively HD. It was shown that the process O2(+) plus D2 yields O2D(+) plus D can be triggered by the 2IIg ground state as well as through the first, relatively long excitation state 4IIu of the O2(+) ion. Between 1.9 eV and 4.5 eV energy an intermediate complex O2D2(+) is formed whose existence is deduced from the observed isotropic distribution of its decomposition product O2D(+). Above 4.5 eV a transition of the impulse mechanism to a stripping process takes place so that the O2(+) ion only collides with one of the two atoms. The reaction Kr(+) plus D2 yields KrD(+) plus D also exhibits isotropic intensity distribution at energies from about 0.8 to 1.8 eV.
