Mass spectroscopic analysis of organic air pollutants was carried out to investigate their effect on platinum and tungsten electric contacts. The separative power of adsorbents was also determined. Organic substances have concentrations in the ppm range, therefore detection must be done with microanalytic methods. An Aston mass spectrometer was used for air investigations. Since air pollutants occur in extreme mixture, ratios and the fragmentation in the mass spectrometer itself complicates the identification of single substances. A preseparation of the mixture was done in a column filled with polymer adsorbent. For comparison, the spectra of pure singular substances were recorded. The separative power of the adsorbent column was checked with known mixtures, and the resident time of the singular substances was recorded.
