Application of Holography to the Visualization of High-Speed Objects

By means of a very precise micromotion generator, it was possible to check the theoretical results. Based on the interference action noticeable in the image reconstruction process, the limits set to high-speed holography were determined as functions of the parameters of the elliptical device, as well as of the object and hologram sizes. Considering diffraction, geometrical abberations, and blurring caused by motion, a set-up was designed and built that, for a resolution of 40 micrometers, allows for holographic recording of projectiles travelling at a velocity of 2 km/sec. For the holographic recording, a single mode Q switched ruby laser was used providing an output pulse of 100 mJ in 20 nsec. The wavelength of the reconstruction differs from that of the picture.
