Degradation of Polymers Used as Insulators in Electrical Materials Due to Discharges . Degradation, Due aux Decharges, des Polymeres Utilises Comme Isolants Dans le Materiel Electrique

A test unit was designed to analyze causes and effects of local electric discharges in a high voltage electric field due to occlusion or defects in polymer insulating materials. Infrared spectroscopy was used to analyze damage caused by heating, excitation, ionization, and electron bombardment. It is shown that ionization is the process which causes the most damage. Polyesters and epoxy resins are listed according to their resistance to local electric discharge damage.
