The research described in this report was performed during the period October 1, 1972 through September 30, 1973 in the area of materials scion e under sponsorship of agencies listed on the inside cover and cited at the end of each item of technical information. A considerable fraction of the work was carried out as part of the MRL program of the Division of Materials Research of NSF (GH 33574) and of the material© research sponsored by the Materials Sciences Office of ARPA. Both of these programs were administered by the Materials Sciences Council. Participants in these programs include faculty and research associates in the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Geosciences, and in the Schools of Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and at the Thermophysical Properties Research Center.
