The expansion and supersonic characteristics of two phase air-water flows were investigated. The influence of a dissolved part of the gas components in the liquid on the equation of state, the relations for the sound velocity, expansion and normal and oblique shocks were determined theoretically. Principal considerations for the measurement of the sound velocity in two phase supersonic flows show that this velocity and the flow Mach number, as well as the dispersion, can be determined from delay measurements and the harmonic analysis of shocks. The application of X-ray flash density measurement to two phase flows is demonstrated. Tests with nozzle contours are described, but perforated blocks are shown to produce improved two phase flows.
