THE FIRST PHASE OF AN EVALUATION PR06RAMME FOR THE SPACE APPLICATION OF GUNN EFFECT AND AVALANCHE DIODES

This report contains a synthesis of the various types of microwave diodes (Gunn effect and Avalanche) for space use and a long in-orbit life.nThe accepted technologies for diode manufacture are described in some de-tail and discussed and evaluated with special regard to the reliability, re¬producibility and long-useful-life aspects. Scaling laws for Gunn and ava¬lanche diodes are used to make a computer programme which generates power and efficiency curves for the different diode types, semiconductor materials, and heatsinking schemes. Diodes for typical operation are tabulated and test diodes are synthesised in detail.
