We describe an inert-gas glove box of our own design which was constructed in order to provide a dry atmosphere for the preparation of samples for spectroscopic and laser experiments. The box was designed with two chambers - the main chamber for housing the bulky equipment such as the centrifuge and balance and for carrying out relatively clean operations, and the work chamber for performing operations which produce fumes or otherwise contaminate the atmosphere. A description is also given of the inert-gas drying and flushing system which made it possible to achieve a moisture level of below 1 ppm by volume in the work chamber and 10 ppm in the main chamber. Typical operations involved in the production of samples of rare-earth salts dissolved in hygroscopic and corrosive solvents are also described.
