The major experimental effort in support of this program is being carried out in the NASA/MSFC Manipulator System Evaluation Laboratory which is housed in the Astrionics Laboratory. Additional work is being conducted in the process engineering facilities at MSFC. Together, these facilities offer the opportunity to conduct appropriate experimental investigations into human performance utili¬zing a wide range of state-of-the-art remote manipulating systems. As in the evaluation of the visual systems, the evaluation of the manipulator systems represents part of the extensive effort undertaken to study the effects of various system parameters on operator performance of tasks necessary for remotely manned missions.nThe initial testing activity involves the evaluation of existing manipulator-controller combinations on a set of standardized tests.
