A number of modal PCM devils wore studied in the first phase of the program to compare the performance of devices provided with no filler material, minimal filler in the form of widely spaced fins, and closely packed filler comprising of honeycomb cells, the latter being laid in two different geometrical con figurations. All models had the sare surface area for heat flow to the device. Experimental drat were obtained for the temporal response of the ticvice and tor the maximum. wall temperature at the time of complete melting as a function of heat input to the device. Results indicate the honeycomb packed devices to be best suited for thermal performance in the presence of low tem perature gradients in the device.
